Our basic premise is that the art and its discourses should be self-validating by virtue of what they are and what they do, not by a reliance on the justifications of the artists’ personal wishes, which first of all are unavailable to anyone who does not know the artist, and secondly reduces the work to a private rather than a public concern. We presume that art is a public matter. But changes in contemporary art and its operating conditions may require us to rethink what theory is doing, and how; and whether its role in relation to developing art
practices may need to be revised. This will of course affect not just what is taught as theory in art schools, but also how it is taught.
