Although the Conservative government is misleadingly calling its preferred legislation ‘Turing’s Law’, it will not offer men the same royal pardon that was posthumously granted to Alan Turing in 2013. The proposed statutory pardon will extend only to a minority of men who were convicted or cautioned for historic homosexual offences. The announcement doesn’t even constitute an apology. The pardon is purely symbolic.
