The dominance of information technologies in contemporary culture has led to the widespread use of algorithmic processing that has transformed our conception of automation. It has been argued that the information age reveals a condition in which the overlap between automation and autonomy has been triggered by the speed of algorithmic procedures of evaluation, control, and decision-making. This article discusses the relation between digitalization and computation by questioning Gilbert Simondon’s energetic view of machines within the context of the historical development of the mechanization of logic.
