Glasgow International 2014
Untitled. A new video work commissioned by Glasgow International, a festival for contemporary art. The work was was shown at Kelvingrove Museum Glasgow.
A short silent video situated across three sites of the Kelvingrove Museum and displayed on HD monitors. The work consists of close up footage of the complete catalogue in three volumes of the Robert and Lisa Sainsbury collection, a set of books in my possession. The physical collection is situated in the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Art in the University of Norwich and one of the first buildings built by Norman Foster.
A white male hand variously obscures reproductions on the page. The hand covers stone faces with fruit, a cigarette packet, other everyday items. At one point a tiny exotic frog jumps across the page.
A reflection on collections, history, representation and reproduction, the work silently searches for a situatedness of its constituent parts. We see a collection housed within another collection. The frog, a motif from a previous work and itself based on a found photograph appears displaced.
The artists camera framing the reproductions and the actions, an obscure conversation playing out on HD monitors across the site of the museum, bland reminders of engagement in close proximity to the museum artefacts, indifferent to such involvement.
