Here We Are

David Hume suggested that what we understand as the self is a stream of fleeting ideas that are based on our perceptions of the world. These ideas appear and pass, creating a never-ending succession of impressions, but not an underlying stability. In these paintings, I have aimed to pinpoint memories that have been central in directing the stream of ideas of my ’self'. As ideas are fleeting and thus long gone from direct awareness, it is not clear if these memories are intact or even representative of what took place. Yet their power remains.
