Common-sense, functional theories, and knowledge of the mind

This is a commentary on two BBS target articles by Gopnick on "How we know our minds" which argues that the child's "theory of mind" is based on inferences from the behavior of self and others, and Goldman on "The psychology of folk psychology" which argues that this is based on direct mental experience. This commentary suggests that there is no need to oppose these options. Rather, a rapprochement is possible between both having special access to one's own private experiences and basing one's theory of mind partly on publicly available evidence.
