Kennington Shaft
The South London neighbourhood of Kennington sank by a centimetre in 2018, due to tunnelling work on the Northern Line extension. In the video ‘Kennington Shaft’, I survey my local streets for signs of subterranean disruption.
‘Kennington Shaft’ (2019), evolved through research undertaken during a production residency at Hospitalfield in 2018. There, I experimented with stop frame animation using 3D depth maps, along with other digital techniques, to create moving image textures based on the engineering concept of 'wrinkle prediction'. The exposed coastline near Arbroath provided geological reference.
The final work, an animation made with images of displaced tarmac, hedges and walls photographed in Kennington, and accompanying text, was installed at TG Gallery in Nottingham in 2019.
