Image Games: Ericka Beckman
Image Games was the first major international film retrospective of the US artist’s works, screening examples from the 1970s to 2013 including many newly restored prints. They were shown alongside work by her (then) more recognised contemporaries, such as Mike Kelley, Vito Acconci, Michael Smith and Julia Heyward, as well as works from an emerging generation of contemporary moving image artists. The programme was accompanied by panel discussions with leading art historians, curators and artists.

This film restrospective established how Beckman’s film and video works mark the rising influence and affect of video gaming, cybernetics and digital image-production on psychological development and social life. A series of screenings showed how her work has long experimented with photography and the moving image and how they might go beyond representation, used to manipulate human imagination and encode individual behaviour and group activity. |
