A screening of a video work, artist talk and question and answer session, by artist Adham Faramawy, introduced and moderated by curator Jessica Cerasi, at the Guggenheim Museum, New York.
‘The air is subtle various and sweet’ is a video work exploring the artist Adham Faramawy’s relationship with their father Saeed, through theor varying relationships to land and place. The work includes spoken word, dance, music and found footage. These include television appearances by Saeed Faramawy, describing his relationship to Egypt and his home town, Toukh, a small rural township in the municipality of Al Qalyubia, north of Cairo. Through explorative movements and a fascination with plants living in the Wanstead Flats nature reserve, the piece compares Saeed’s certainty and national pride as an Egyptian living in Egypt, with Adham’s uncertainty and ambivalence as a migrant in east London, England.
