What's That Hanging on My Bicycle?

Williams pays tribute to artist and writer Coosje van Bruggen, who died in 2009. Van Bruggen emerged in the milieu of Conceptual art in the late 1960s and became one of its earliest historians. She began collaborating with artist Claes Oldenburg in 1976 (they married in 1977) as both an artist and the primary scholar of his work, and she also served as a member of the selection committee for Documenta 7 in Kassel in 1982 and as a regular contributor to Artforum from 1983 to 1988. Her scholarly work culminated in definitive monographs on Baldessari, Hanne Darboven, Frank Gehry, and Bruce Nauman. Believing that writing should not come out of a preexisting methodology or ideological position, she always began with the work of art and discussions with the artist.
