FIELD OF KNOWLEDGE: METHODOLOGY: The show demonstrated an evolution of mark making over a six year period, when the adaption, multiplication, hybridization and modification of a whole lexicon of marks took place between 2005 and 2011. The most recent paintings in the show took an art historical painting with similar ideas and sentiments to my own body of work; such as Graham Sutherland’s semi - abstract landscapes that are imbued with a similar sinister undercurrent. By initially painting the historical work, like a transcription – the wet surface of painting is then shifted and moved and forced into a dialogue with my own language of painting. A new painting is created, but it contains, like a shadow, the remnants of the original transcription. The paintings are brought into conversation with modernist works, and fold their cultural significance into the contemporary language of my paintings. The paintings add to the significant move to re-examine some of the fast and furious steps made by the march of Modernism. DISSEMINATION: The work was sold to a number of public and private museums and will be exhibited within these collections. The large globe piece was sold to the SEAH Collection, and is currently displayed at SEAH HG in Goonsan Province. The company is currently planning the SEAH Contemporary Art Museum in central Seoul where the work will be exhibited in the future. There was a prominent review of the show in a key newspaper in Seoul. To accompany the exhibition a full catalogue of all the works in the exhibition was published by The Page Gallery. The book included text by Martin Herbert and James Freeman. (Colour 60 pages, 297mm by 244mm). |
