This patent was part of a large research project, Homescapes, which took place between 1999 and 2002 within the advanced technology research unit of NCR (The Knowledge Lab) and latterly in the Design Department at Goldsmiths. The project examined the changing nature of information usage within the domestic environment. It used an ethnographic approach in the collection and analysis of data pertaining to the circulation and organisation of domestic information systems. The project produced a series of physical and digital prototypes that invented new forms of interactive interfaces. The patent was granted in 2004 for an application that utilized Radio Frequency Identification tags (RFID) for the connection and navigation of objects, and their histories, within the domestic domain. The project has attached a further five patents that are pending.
