In response to a question asked by this one-day symposium: what is the relationship between the creative and the critical?, I presented a paper which explored the question drawing on cultural theorist Mieke Bal's proposition that an artwork is a 'theoretical object' in its own right. I recounted a performance experiment in which I made an action in response to a moment in Finnish artist Eija-Liisa Ahtila's Annunciation (2011), and outlined the making of this as a creative critical process.
