La ‘verbal music’ di James Joyce in traduzione
In Translation Studies, scholars have frequently discussed the need to translate the style of literary texts together with their content, especially when the former is «dominant» in the ST. In A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and 'Sirens', Joyce's style, sometimes characterized by what scholars define as «verbal music», is often one of the «dominants». My aim here is to consider how to translate some aspects of this «verbal music» through the principles of the «Science of Rhythm» – a discipline which influenced the style of many Modernists. In the article, firstly, I report S. Lanier's rhythmic theory. Secondly, I focus on some passages from A Portrait and 'Sirens', in order to identify the «dominant» musical elements. Finally, considering some published Italian translations of the texts, I show how the musicality of the TT could be improved through an analysis of the rhymical patterns of the ST.
