thinking through knowing through doing
This sonic essay and critical introduction were created in response to the event 'doing together' at Bath Sap University, on 4-5 April 2024. 'doing together' is a yearly two-day making and sharing practice symposium. I conducted a performance ethnography of the event, centred around micro recordings and sonic observations, that were formed into the sonic essay both during and after 'doing together'; this work was presented as the keynote to the symposium, and was finalised after the event to reflect all of the work observed and interacted with, read through a framework considering process, method, and ethics. I have combined the recordings that I have made with a text that filters and reflects moments from doing together, sometimes taking these as propositions for thought, presented as the possibility for future meaning-making than a single interpretation. The sonic essay does not represent linear time but the filtering of these words and sounds through the ethnographic framework that I brought to them. My editing interventions have been minimal, in order to present a sonic picture of the event that has elements of the documentary, the serendipitous, the organic.
