Extending my previous analysis of Joyce's use of Dante in Dubliners (see http://eprints.gold.ac.uk/4425/), this article considers Chaucer as a further significant medieval intertext for the short story “Grace” (originally intended as the last story of Dubliners), and argues that this story too contributes to the way Joyce uses intertextuality in order to elaborate his concern for questions of ethics and authority, as they affect texts, authors, and readers.
