The play deals with the phenomenon of the “American Dream” and as such, oscillates between a dream state and reality. The drama is set at Steel Pier, an amusement pier in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The year is 1933, which is synonymous with a time of economic strife for society after the crash of the New York stock exchange. We are brought to an environment, which personifies the essence of show-business and reality. Participants of a dance marathon dance day and night, only with 15 minute breaks for rest and drinks. The initially entertaining idea of making a quick buck dancing becomes a physically and mentally grueling battle, and consequently, a jolly musical full of pleasant tunes transforms into a serious musical drama. Steel Pier is a place in America where everything can happen if you have the courage and stamina to make your dreams come true. The contrast of economic crisis set in the environment of an amusement park also offers the stories of Steel Pier’s main characters, who balance between reality and theatre, between hope and dismay.
