The International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) performs two newly-commissioned works by two composers based in France—Patricia Alessandrini and Juan Pablo Carreño. Alessandrini's Gurre-Klänge takes a magnifying glass to Arnold Schoenberg's most outrageously large-scale work, Gurrelieder, while Carreño's Self-Fiction series creates violent walls of sound that break down conventional rules of music performance.

Colombian composer Juan Pablo Carreño is quickly emerging as a prodigious and dynamic voice from a region traditionally underrepresented in contemporary music. His varied work explores violent contrasts and thick blocks of sound that challenge notions of traditional acoustic performance.

Patricia Alessandrini’s energetic, improvisatory works feature innovative uses of live electronics and interactive situations involving video and other media. Her work combines movement and music, recorded and live images, to create a performance that does not follow chronology but rather jumps forwards and backwards in time.
